Though it was sold early, on September 26th, the official release date of the Nintendo 64 was September 29th, 1996.  This makes today the official 20th Anniversary of the Nintendo 64.

The console launched in the US with just 2 titles, Pilotwings 64 and Super Mario 64.

The console sold nearly 33 million units worldwide before being discontinued in 2003.  It was also the last home console to use cartridges as its format (if rumors are true, the Nintendo NX could change that)

I didn’t have a Nintendo 64 during its prime.  I acquired one later, but still have not spent a lot of time with it.  I’m still working on building up my collection.  However, my son is pretty much addicted to playing Super Mario 64 on it.

What are your memories of the Nintendo 64?  Do you still play it, and which games?  Let me know in the comments section.
